Rio Review Spring 2019 Publication - Cover artwork and page content
About the book: The Rio Review grew out of a desire to showcase student creative work in the Arts and Humanities. Published twice a year, Spring and Fall, the journal features poems, prose, screenplays and artwork by students at ACC.
Makenna is a lifelong Austinite, visual artist, and full-time art student currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in fine art. At present she works in 2D. She is exploring new techniques, and studying perspective, shape, texture, and value. The mediums she is most attracted to are oil, graphite, watercolor, relief printing, and lithography.
The subjects Makenna chooses for her drawings are locations, animals, people, and objects that spark her interest. She loves compositions that draw the viewer in; many of her drawings contain deep perspective and lots of overlapping.
Makenna’s three biggest influences are Georgia O'Keefe, for her bright shapes and blunt, honest personality; Frida Kahlo, for her raw depictions of her personal hardship; and Emma Lea Mayton, who, as my very first art teacher, laid the foundation for me to become an artist.
